Last night I went to one of my favorite spots in Little Tokyo. I cannot emphasize enough how much I enjoy uni. I cannot eat salmon, tuna, or any of the normal stuff. My tastes are getting more eccentric. I’m really enjoying sweet shrimp too. This spot in Little Tokes always brings it home for me. Simply the best. I went a little farther with my palette and tried uni with quill’s egg. Pretty pretty goot!
I was working at the Cassette studio today. Josh (DCMA) came in and later he called his friend and mentor Dan to swing by. Both Josh and Dan are from New York and happened to be both in LA at the same time. Ever since I met Josh, we hit it off because we were able to share real in-depth conversations about culture and the role creativity has within it. Also, Josh is one of the most genuine people you will ever meet. So when Josh told me about Dan, and how about how much of an influence he was on him, I was eager to meet the man. Dan currently runs (Sarkissian Mason), a full service interactive agency that include ESPN to Boeing among their esteemed clientele. In addition to that, Dan is just as expected, a very classy guy. His history is deep. He is the founder of one of the first snowboarding clothing brands - Twist - back in the 90s. He’s played a integral role with virtually every significant person and brand within the action sports/street/fashion/art communities. Dan was wearing Thom Browne from head to toe, and it turns out that he has a few friends who work for the brand itself. Clearly a man ahead of the curve. I shared a very enjoyable conversation and I look forward to reconnecting with Dan when I’m back in New York.
Meet Ricardo. Head Pattern/Sample maker at the Cassette studio. I’ve known Ricardo since the days we worked together at Hudson Jeans at the industrial warehouse of Vernon. Ricardo is always smiling and is always quick to crack a joke or make a wry observation. He brings great energy where ever he goes. I always jab him about his customized pants he makes and also the fact that he is so tech-saavy, bringing in his hard drives and his 20 inch wide laptop to watch soccer game recaps. He told me he occasionally checks up on me and reads my blogs so I thought it fitting to shed him some love. Hey Ricardo! I got you! Ha!
Josh (DCMA) was in town so he invited PJL (Cassette) and I to the Roosevelt where he was spinning. The band that he is working with - White Tie Affair - were performing. When we arrived, it turned out they were also filming an episode of The Hills as well. We just cooled out and grabbed a few drinks too. I invited Kim to roll out and we pretended we were Hollywood stars all night long.
I hit up the Mayan Theatre today to peep the Bloc Party concert. I haven’t been to this spot for a minute. The last time was 4 years ago and it was for a hip hop concert. I remember be too drunk and too dizzy making my way up all those stairs. This time around I went to the venue and yep, I found myself too drunk and too dizzy once again. Bloc Party rocked however. It’s crazy since I remember we did a review on Bloc Party 4 years ago (http://evilmonito.com/archives/021/music/bloc/party.htm). Man how time flies!
Today was a creative day. Actually to be honest ever since I got back from New York, I’ve been on a creative mindset which is odd since I was sick for the most part of my trip. I’ve been spending insane amounts of hours at the office as of late and my schedule is craze. I visited the Cassette studio today and got a chance to reconnect with Pete. The Cassette studio is a place where I always feel challenged to get my work done.
Last night I was feeling antsy after spending an inordinate amount of time in front of the computer. It’s been crazy as of late as we are busy set to launch the new Evil Monito Magazine. We have Yoko Ono as cover story, we assure you it will be worth the wait. Meanwhile I don’t know if you’ve noticed but EM has quickly become a destination site for relevant cultural information.
Rolled out to K-tizzle and had a few drinks with the boys. I nursed my glass of Soju for the most part. I was really impressed by the Anju (appetizer) plates here. My personal fave was the Potato stew, I would’ve taken pics but I was too eager to eat.
Thom Browne looks at mens fashion from a very practical point of view, this is partly the reason why I enjoy his clothing. Yet at the same time, here’s a man that jogs every day in Central Park, eats breakfast at the same Diner every day and cuts his hair at a traditional barbershop. He was once quoted as saying that a man should not spend more than $30.00 on a hair cut. And yet his suits command the prestigious cost of $5,000.00. It is the eccentricities of the man that makes him a great designer.
Felipe (Community Shorts) came by and we shared a chat. We’re making some more adjustments on the Evil Monito site. We are very excited of how the site has grown the last few months alone. Felipe and I share a common approach to design and interactivity. Above all I think we both strive to put quality at the forefront. Much respect.
